Purchasing your first home is a major milestone, but it can also feel overwhelming. For many, it is the most substantial financial commitment they will ever make.
At MSB, we help first-time buyers across the UK navigate the legal process with clarity, fixed fees, and total peace of mind.
To support first-time buyers navigating the legal and practical complexities of purchasing a home, we have prepared a series of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). These cover a wide range of topics, from understanding legal terminology and the conveyancing timeline to practical advice on mortgage offers, surveys and searches.
Our aim is to demystify the process and empower buyers with clear, accessible information at every stage of their journey.
FAQs
What is a survey, and do I need one?
A survey assesses a property’s structure, condition and value. They aren’t necessary but typically strongly advised, as they help to identify potential issues that may affect the price or your future enjoyment of the property. If you are buying a property with a mortgage, your mortgage lender will likely undertake a mortgage valuation. This is a basic survey designed for them to assess whether they should lend against the property. These surveys are designed for the lender’s use only and don’t go into much detail, so if you would like more in-depth information, you should instruct a separate survey.
