Two young members of the team at MSB, Sarah McGuiness and Thomas Stockton, were directly involved in organising and delivering this year’s Merseyside Junior Lawyers Division Ball on Friday 18th May. Sarah Coakley, also of MSB Solicitors, was treasurer for the event managing suppliers and finance.

The event, which was held at Liverpool’s Shankly Hotel and sponsored by Thornton Legal, was attended by 135 members of Liverpool city region’s legal sector. Singer Kieran McKay performed as guests arrived at a Prosecco drinks reception on the hotel’s rooftop terrace, kindly sponsored by Harrington Street Chambers.

Further entertainment was provided throughout the evening by Six15 Sax, Bongos and a Dj set. The Garden of Eden terrace remained open throughout the evening for guests to enjoy the good weather.

Attention to detail was key in preparing for the evening, which entailed a flower wall, selfie mirror and personalised MJLD lighting – perfect for capturing photographs. The room was decorated with white rose table centrepieces and beautifully designed menu’s and table plan.

Sarah McGuiness, who jointly organised the event, said: “I’ve really enjoyed being involved with this year’s ball and I’m incredibly proud of how well everything went. The atmosphere was amazing, everyone was dressed to the nines and dancing throughout the evening. We were so lucky with the weather too. The sun was shining and we were able to enjoy the rooftop terrace until late in the evening. A lot of people have said it was the best ball yet.

“I’d like to thank all our sponsors, Thornton Legal, Harrington Street Chambers and The University of Liverpool who sponsored a photographer for the evening. Huge thanks as well to Red Door who hosted the after party and provided drinks for all our guests. It meant we were able to extend the night, which was so enjoyed by so many.”

Awards were handed out on the evening to Andrew Ball from Weightmans who won Star paralegal of the Year; Hannah Bickley of Broudie Jackson Canter who won Cilex Star of the Year; and Rachael Payne of 2020 Legal who won Star Trainee of the Year. Rebecca Emmit and Sarah Coakley from MSB were nominated. Chris Topping, vice chair of Liverpool Law Society, also gave a speech on the importance of Legal Aid and access to justice.

The nominated charity for the evening was Clatterbridge Cancer Charity. MJLD have been fundraising for the charity over the course of the last year and have raised an impressive £4100, which will go towards the development of the new Clatterbridge CCCNHS hospital.

Fran D’arcy from the Clatterbridge gave a heart felt speech on the evening, before playing a moving video demonstrating the work they do at the centre. The new Clatterbridge CCCNHS Hospital will commemorate MJLD and the funds they have raised.
