Liverpool played a key role at the NatWest British LGBT Awards 2018, with managing partner of MSB, Emma Carey, and comedian John Bishop leading the way in equality and inclusion.

Emma was shortlisted in the Corporate Ally of the Year category for her work to promote diversity in the firm, which now employs more than 100 people across three offices in Liverpool.

She didn’t win the award - the accolade went to Peter Madden of Arcadis - but Emma firmly established MSB’s credentials as one of the most progressive law firms in the country.

However, John Bishop did win the Celebrity Ally of the Year Award and gave an a powerful and moving speech about his own gay son.

“I was so pleased to be nominated. I brought my whole family, my wife and my three sons who I love and I am massively proud of,” he told the audience in an emotional address.

The Liverpool connection to the LGBT Awards goes even further still as developer and hotel operator, Signature Living, was one of the event’s headline sponsors and Daniel Hughes, a leading PR professional in Liverpool, was involved in organising the event at Marriott Hotel in Grosvenor Square, London.

Emma said she is proud to manage a firm where all staff, irrespective of sexuality, gender, race or social circumstance, feel supported, included and empowered to reach their full potential.

She explained: “We all, as individuals, have something unique to offer to the workplace and to the world, and we recognise that at MSB. We appreciate the value of having a multi-faceted, multi-skilled and diverse workforce and the benefits it presents for our clients.

“I do not view equality and diversity as a business ‘policy’ – a set of rules we are obliged to follow. I see equality and inclusion as something that guides our principles and defines our values.”

Emma is currently working with other firms in the region to give guidance on policies and practices relating to equality and diversity.
