A new project will take 100 young people from a diverse range of communities in Liverpool and across the UK, with the aim of creating a new generation of dynamic social entrepreneurs.

A few months ago the former Minister for Merseyside, Lord Heseltine, told an audience in Liverpool that the top-down approach to community regeneration was flawed and that it was for local people on the ground to create their own “ladders of aspiration”.

Now, in a radical reboot of the old ‘work experience’ concept, national charity Drivers for Change has chosen Liverpool as one of eight locations for its new programme to inspire genuine social transformation and MSB are proud supporters.

The tour is the first of its kind in the UK and will visit eight towns and cities in England, Scotland and Wales in just 11 days. The young people enrolled will meet successful entrepreneurs, activists, community organisers and artists that are working to make their communities thrive.

There will also be a participatory learning programme offering young learners access to practical advice and support, as well as opportunities to exchange ideas and transfer knowledge and skills with their peers through practical workshops, in order to develop or enhance their own business plan.

Drivers for Change project manager Gemma Heard, said: “The aim of the programme is to arm participants with enough insight into progressive ways of working so that they can gain a greater understanding of how they can create social change within their own communities.

“One of the issues raised by employers is that young recruits to their businesses sometimes lack the so-called ‘soft skills’… having the emotional intelligence to interact effectively with colleagues and customers. This will be one of the issues addressed by the project.”

The tour will visit eight locations this June, including Liverpool, Bradford, Edinburgh, Sunderland, Birmingham, Port Talbot, Weston-Super-Mare and London.

Drivers for Change is inspired by the world's biggest enterprise journey; Jagriti Yatra in India. Now in its tenth year, Jagritri Yatra has taken more than 3,000 young people on a 14-day tour of India and has been the catalyst for a number of innovative social action projects.

MSB is supporting this year’s programme and managing partner Emma Carey has been involved with its launch. She said: “We are committed to providing alternative routes into professional careers at MSB and feel strongly that those businesses with a clear commitment to social change have an important place within our society.

“In 2015, we launched the MSB Academy – a programme designed to encourage staff at MSB to be enterprising, think outside the box and challenge themselves in their roles here.

“It is about imparting real life business experiences and advice that will be so important to their development as budding lawyers, and as the people who will be ultimately responsible for driving the continued growth of the firm.

“Drivers for Change mirrors our ethos in many ways and we’re very proud to be involved.”
