Mark Bibby, eldest son of MSB’s managing partner Paul Bibby, will be taking part in the AJ Bell London Triathlon this Saturday 22 July in aid of Pancreatic Cancer UK.
Mark and all those taking part will complete a 1.5km swim, 40km cycle and 10km run – which is the official Olympic Triathlon distance.
The charity is one that is close to the hearts of Paul, Mark and the Bibby family after Paul’s mother-in-law, Mark’s grandmother, was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer last year.

Mark says: “I’m raising money for Pancreatic Cancer UK because my Grandma was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer back in October. We lost her earlier this year, it was all very sudden.
“Before her diagnoses, I hadn't heard a great deal about this particular cancer, but after it affected my family I started to read into it and found some quite shocking information. It became clear that it is still a form of cancer that is much misunderstood.”
Pancreatic cancer can affect anyone at any age and survival rates are worryingly slim. There are no common symptoms for sufferers of pancreatic cancer, which makes it difficult to detect. Often it is misdiagnosed or diagnosed very late on, meaning little can be done in the way of treatment.
There are around 10,000 people diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer each year in the UK. Only 1% of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in England and Wales survive their disease for ten years or more, and less than 5 in 100 (3%) will survive their disease for five years or more. Around three quarters of those diagnosed will die within just 12 months.
Pancreatic Cancer UK aims to raise enough money to fund important research into effective treatments – and perhaps more importantly, to seek ways to detect pancreatic cancer earlier, which could significantly impact the survival rate.
The Pancreatic Cancer UK website states: “Over the last decade, less than one percent of UK cancer research spend has been directed towards pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer needs bold investment to transform the future and to deliver the step change that can alter the outcome for those diagnosed with this devastating disease.”
Mark adds: “Research carried out by PCUK and advances in early diagnosis methods could be a massive game changer in catching the disease early enough to make a significant difference.”
