We are thrilled to have been short-listed for best small firm at this year’s Northern Power Women Awards.

The Northern Power Women Awards was set up to promote gender equality in the North of England, accelerate gender pay parity and create real life role models.

The awards aim to celebrate those individuals and organisations who are demonstrably taking strides to alter business culture to create equal opportunities for all.

Family partner at MSB, Emma Carey said: “A diverse workforce is certainly something MSB can boast.

“When I joined MSB in 2000, it was an all-male partnership and I was the only female solicitor. 16 years later, we now have an equal gender partnership with 7 female partners and 28 female solicitors working in the firm – so clearly we have created an environment in which women feel they can achieve.”

Last month, MSB announced five new partners, 3 of whom work alongside Emma in the family team.

Hayley Catherall, Nicola Harris and Emma Palmer have all overcome challenges in their professional careers. Hayley did not follow the traditional route into law and both Nicola and Emma have two children under the age of 4.

Emma adds:

“It really is testament to the changes we have made as a firm to remove traditional barriers and smash the glass ceiling. In the last four years, there have been 20 babies born within the firm and all of those women, like Nicola and Emma, have returned to work at MSB. It is an incredible achievement and something I am very proud of.”

“I can’t describe what a privilege it is to be part of a firm that is succeeding in creating an environment where all our staff can achieve their potential.”

Northern Power Women Awards winners will be chosen by judging panel and announced at a dinner in Manchester on March 7. You can see the full short list here http://www.northernpowerwomen.co.uk/shortli
