MSB Solicitors - Claire House

MSB has raised almost £13,000 for Wirral children’s hospice Claire House after two years of focused fundraising.

Claire House were initially announced as our nominated charity in 2015 following a staff vote. In 2016, it was decided, again by democratic vote, that we would continue to support Claire House for a second year.

Liverpool law firm MSB Solicitors has reported its strongest financial results to date for the financial year ending 28 February 2017.

Turnover increased by 16% on the same period last year to exceed £5m for the first time in the firm's history and net profit leapt by more than 50%.

The firm has undertaken a number of innovative measures to ensure steady growth in recent years. Capping overheads, utilising existing office space at its South Liverpool sites and responsible staff expansion have all contributed to the increase.

At the beginning of the year, MSB relocated their city centre office to 4 St Paul’s Square and were able to finance the move wholly from money that would otherwise have been spent on dilapidations under their previous lease.

Liverpool law firm MSB Solicitors will remember the hundreds of thousands of victims of honour-based abuse next month at an event organised by Savera UK.

Honour-based abuse is a collection of practices, which are used to control behaviour within families or other social groups to protect perceived cultural and religious beliefs and/or honour and can extend to physical violence, coercion, intimidation and manipulation, forced marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM).

Honour-based violence often very brutal and most commonly involves women suffering abuse at the hands of their husbands.

But it can also involve children being abused by parents, parents being abused by children or gay men or women being subjugated, abused or even killed by members of their family, extended family or wider community.

Because honour-based abuse often involves multiple family members cases can become complex and it is necessary for both alleged victims and perpetrators to avail themselves of legal representation.

Earlier this month, research carried our by Hamptons International revealed it takes the average single buyer in the UK almost 12 years to save for their first home, based on raising a 15% deposit investment.

However, increasing availability of loans of 90% or more (up by 1.2% in the final quarter of 2016 than the previous year) coupled with falling mortgage rates, paints a more positive picture for first time buyers.

The cost of borrowing at over 95% has fallen by more than other types of loans and could cut the saving time for first time buyers to just four years.

MSB Solicitors, Liverpool Tennis Tournament

MSB Solicitors has donated the funds to buy hundreds of racquets for tennis-mad local children.

MSB will be a presenting sponsor of this summer's Liverpool Hope International Tennis Tournament and the racquets will be used for the festival's Kids Day on June 14.

Kids Day has become an integral part of the festival programme and now incorporates around 1,000 children from across the city region.

But organisers say as the day has grown and evolved, it has been difficult to keep up with the growing demand for equipment and this year they faced a shortfall of around 400 tennis racquets for the event.

MSB have this month unveiled a number of new appointments and changes to its team.

Solicitor Andy Matthias joins us from Temperley Taylor in Manchester to head up the firm’s private client team.

He has worked as a solicitor for 27 years having previously studied at the University of De Montfort in Leicester and then at the College of Law in Chester.

Specialising in matrimonial finance and private children disputes and proceedings, Andy’s career has also seen him work at three other Manchester practices - Linda Myers, Olliers Solicitors and Merrick.

“I bring a pragmatic, compassionate and conciliatory approach to dealing with family law matters and my aim is to grow the volume of private paying work at MSB,” he said.

“I have a wealth of experience in all types of family law matters, including domestic violence matters, public law proceedings, divorce and financial matters.”

MSB Solicitors has played a major role in the expansion of Signature Living Developments - representing the group in its latest venture Signature Works.

MSB assisted Signature with the £3m purchase of the Bling Bling Building in March. The iconic building on Hanover Street was home to celebrity hairdresser Herbert Howe, and is the third in the Signature Works portfolio.

The salon will remain on the first floor of the building, which was designed by Peter Gough to reflect the personality of flamboyant Howe, who died in October.
Signature Works is the co-working arm of Signature Living Developments, which will introduce almost 20,000 sq ft of flexible work space to the market in Liverpool city centre.

Next week, May 8 - 14, marks mental health awareness week.

Poor mental health is one of the biggest issues in the workplace today, causing more than 70 million working days to be lost each year – a figure that has soared 24% since 2010.

One in five people admit to taking days of work due to stress and around a quarter of the working population say they would consider resigning through stress.

So what is causing this incline in poor mental health?

The effects of Government-imposed cuts on money, jobs and benefits are all certainly affecting factors. Add to that, that less than half of employees in the UK say they wouldn’t feel comfortable talking to their manager or line manager about feeling stressed at work.

Well done to Danielle Blaylock from our commercial department and Alison Thomas, who ditched their desks and took to the dance floor to raise funds for our nominated charity, Claire House, earlier this month.

The Strictly Come Dancing event held at the Titanic Hotel in Liverpool raised over £40,000 to support seriously and terminally ill children from the Wirral and beyond.
