MSB Solicitors Liverpool
MSB added to its growing collection of awards after picking up Corporate Social Responsibility Business of the Year at the Liverpool Echo Business Awards 2018.

The awards, now in their 24th year, are the longest standing business awards in the Liverpool city region. Other big winners on the evening included Birkenhead shipyard Cammell Laird, and Liverpool Vision boss Max Steinberg who was crowned Business Person of the Year.

String of accolades
It comes as the latest in a string of awards for MSB, whose recent wins have included Legal Firm of the Year at The City of Liverpool Business Awards 2017, the coveted Chairman’s Award at the Liverpool Women in Business Awards 2018, and Best Regional Firm for the North at the national Family Law Awards 2017.

The judges at the Family Law Awards commented: “We were particularly impressed with this firm's dedication to promoting diversity and career progression within its team and its excellent pro-bono and community initiatives and its commitment to the campaign for legal aid.”

Managing partner of MSB, Emma Carey, says philanthropy does not have to come at a cost

Emma Carey assumed the role of managing partner of MSB in March 2018. Previously partner and head of the firm’s family department, Emma has been pivotal to the growth and direction of MSB throughout its 30 years.

MSB is a firm built on progressive, people-orientated policies, something Emma says she will uphold and evolve.

And whilst Emma’s new strategy and vision for the firm is firmly centred on fee growth and profitability, she has pledged to take on work in emerging areas of the law and is committed to always delivering social value.

We are delighted to announce that from September 2018, we welcome Cheesman & Co to the fold at MSB.
Cheesman & Company specialises in family law and its team has more than 40 years’ experience servicing clients nationally. The firm brings a strong portfolio of clients and will bolster MSB’s growing family and property law teams, based across offices in Allerton and the city centre.
The move comes as part of managing partner Emma Carey’s strategy to drive financial growth across key areas of the firm and follows the acquisition of debt recovery firm Matrix in January.

A training contract with a major firm is the number one priority for every third-year law student and so, inevitably, competition is fierce.

Failure to land one quickly, particularly if your peers appear to be making headway, can quickly lead to frustration and disillusionment. However, establishing a career in the law isn’t a race and sometimes being patient and seeking an alternative route can be the smart thing to do.

In September this year, I start my training contract with MSB Solicitors in Liverpool - and I could not be happier about that-  and when I do begin I will be bringing much more than just a good degree and youthful enthusiasm.

There have been genuine concerns around the health of the office market in Liverpool. With a dwindling stock of grade A space those concerns are certainly justified. But there are reasons to be optimistic.

Over the past couple of years we have lost something in the region of 1m sq ft of office space as old stock has been converted in to apartments, restaurants and hotels.

That process must be seen as largely positive. It has brought empty accommodation, no longer suitable for modern office occupiers, back into use and helped stimulate Liverpool’s residential property market and its £4bn visitor economy.

Head of our residential property team and partner at MSB, Tracey Quirk, is seeing an increase in instruction from high net worth individuals buying new homes across Merseyside.
Tracey has established a reputation as a go to solicitor for wealthy and well-heeled clients, including prominent city professionals, footballers and celebrities.
She is currently assisting a professional football player with the purchase of a new home worth £2.8m; and has overseen another recent transaction for a married couple, both lawyers, which involved the purchase of a £750,000 house in an exclusive area of Merseyside.

Two young members of the team at MSB, Sarah McGuiness and Thomas Stockton, were directly involved in organising and delivering this year’s Merseyside Junior Lawyers Division Ball on Friday 18th May. Sarah Coakley, also of MSB Solicitors, was treasurer for the event managing suppliers and finance.

The event, which was held at Liverpool’s Shankly Hotel and sponsored by Thornton Legal, was attended by 135 members of Liverpool city region’s legal sector. Singer Kieran McKay performed as guests arrived at a Prosecco drinks reception on the hotel’s rooftop terrace, kindly sponsored by Harrington Street Chambers.

Further entertainment was provided throughout the evening by Six15 Sax, Bongos and a Dj set. The Garden of Eden terrace remained open throughout the evening for guests to enjoy the good weather.

Liverpool played a key role at the NatWest British LGBT Awards 2018, with managing partner of MSB, Emma Carey, and comedian John Bishop leading the way in equality and inclusion.
Emma was shortlisted in the Corporate Ally of the Year category for her work to promote diversity in the firm, which now employs more than 100 people across three offices in Liverpool.
She didn’t win the award - the accolade went to Peter Madden of Arcadis - but Emma firmly established MSB’s credentials as one of the most progressive law firms in the country.
However, John Bishop did win the Celebrity Ally of the Year Award and gave an a powerful and moving speech about his own gay son.
“I was so pleased to be nominated. I brought my whole family, my wife and my three sons who I love and I am massively proud of,” he told the audience in an emotional address.

MSB has announced that three of its young trainee lawyers will qualify into permanent fee-earning roles with the firm this summer.

Paralegals Rebecca Emmit and Sarah McGuiness along with Thomas Stockton, who joined the firm as an office junior aged just 18, will take up roles as solicitors within MSB’s commercial and conveyancing departments in September.

Managing partner at MSB, Emma Carey, says it is an indication of the firm's commitment to training and nurturing the next generation of lawyers.

She adds: “MSB itself, has experienced steady and organic growth throughout its 30-year history and we are proud that a high proportion of employees who joined us in junior or trainee roles have continued to enjoy long and successful careers within the firm.”
