A. Vioxx is a prescription, Cox-2selective non-steroidal anti inflammatory drug (NSAID) that was approved by the FDA in May 1999 and approved for use in the U.K. in June 1999 for the relief and signs and symptoms of osteo-arthritis, for the management of acute pain in adults and for the treatment of menstrual symptoms. Q. What do I need to know about Vioxx ?

A. On 30th September 2004 Merck & Co Inc. announced a voluntary withdrawal of Vioxx (rofecoxib) from the US and worldwide market due to the safety concerns of increased risk of cardiovascular events (including heart attacks and strokes) in patients on Vioxx. Merck made the decision independent of input from the FDA.

Q. Does todays actions suggest that other drugs in the same class are dangerous ?

A. The results of clinical studies with one drug in a given class do not necessary apply to the other drugs in the same class.
